Part I: Artist Statement
My art is inspired by beautiful creatures I have seen and places I have traveled. A breakthrough I have had is discovering my love for realism. Another major breakthrough of mine has been discovering I love to paint animals that I have memories of. For example I remember seeing an octopus at the Seattle Aquarium which inspired my realistic octopus painting.
As an artist I like to create realistic paintings of beautiful creatures and places. My style reflects who I am as a person because I love visiting beautiful places, seeing beautiful animals, and learning more about the earth. I want my art to help people see the beauty in nature. I want to make people feel curious when they see my art and wonder what else nature has to offer.
Without art my life would be very similar to how it is now. Art has never been a major part of my life. Although I have always been in enrolled in an art class I have never before enjoyed art like have this year. I learned that creating art is a great way for me to be creative and relax. In the future I hope to take more classes and further my education in visual art.
Part II: Images of Artwork and Rationale
Visual Arts Standard #1: Artistic Thinking and Behaviors - I can approach artistic problem-solving using multiple solutions and the creative process.

5.5x7 Glazing studies Watercolor |
7.5x11 Mountain Trees Watercolor
Self Directed Project #2 Thumbnail Sketch Pencil
Standard #1 Rational: These images demonstrate my success in the first standard I can approach artistic problem-solving using multiple solutions and the creative process because I had to use creative thinking to problem solve in every one of these projects. For example my self directed project #2 thumbnail sketches I had to use creative thinking to avoid plagiarizing my inspiration picture. Another time I used creative thinking to problem solving was when painting my landscape, I had to be creative and mix two paints to create a dark enough color for the closer objects. Lastly I used creative thinking to problem solve when making watercolor techniques and glazing study, the problem I faced was containing paint in the lines and to solve this problem I experimented with different size and shaped brushes until I found one that worked for me.
Visual Arts Standard #2: Responding - I can apply literacy skills to describe, analyze, interpret, and evaluate art.
Critique of self directed one pencil
Critique of realistic still life Pencil
Final Critique Pencil
Standard #2 Rational: The photos above show my completions of standard two I can apply literacy skills to describe, analyze, interpret, and evaluate art because they are all evaluations that describe, analyze, interpret, and evaluate mine and others art. One example being my critique of self directed one, On this critique I especially showed my ability to describe using literary skills. In the final critique I excelled in analyzing a creative arts piece and in my critique of realistic still life I did well on evaluate.
Visual Arts Standard #3: Connecting - I can understand the relationship among the arts, history and world culture. I can make connections among the arts and to other disciplines, to goal-setting, and to interpersonal interaction.
Art History Research
Planning Self Directed Project One Pencil
Planning for Self Directed Project Two Pencil
Standard #3 Rational: These images show that I understand how art, history, and world culture are all related because they show my own history that inspired my art, how the artist Georgia O'keeffe was influenced by her history, and how I used goal setting. In the art history research project I learned how someones history and culture effected their art. In planning self directed one I learned how to write S.M.A.R.T. goals that helped me achieve what I wanted to. In planning for self directed project two I further my knowledge on setting goals that helped me create art that I am proud of and used my own personal history to inspire my creation.
Visual Arts Standard #4: Producing and Presenting - I can create an original body of work and and then select my best work to present it in a portfolio and an exhibition.
11x15 Ocean Watercolor
11x7.5 Flowers Watercolor
15x11 Beach Watercolor
Standard #4 Rational: The photos above show that I was successful in creating an original body of work and and then selecting my best work to present it in my portfolio and an exhibition because the work presented are my most successful pieces. The first image is my third self directed project in which I took ownership in creating by deciding to add darker shades without asking others opinions. The second image is my realistic still life one of my best creations which I chose to present in my portfolio and the third image is my self directed project two which was my most successful project that I presented in both the exhibition and my portfolio.
Part III: Evaluation of Portfolio
This portfolio is successful because it shows my growth as a visual artist in this class by presenting my watercolor creations that correspond with each visual arts standard. Each standard has three images that show I complete all requirements for the standard. For example the first standard, I can approach artistic problem-solving using multiple solutions and the creative process I showed images of my first watercolor pieces in which I learned to problem solve and use the creative process. I did this for all standers and wrote rationals that is why this portfolio is successful.
